Wellness Wisdom- Oil Pulling

If you are a follower on my gram you know that I love a good morning routine. There are a few different things I do every morning as part of my wellness practice but this one just might be my favourite. If you’re new to your wellness journey oil pulling may not be something you’ve heard of before but I’m confident the benefits will inspire you to want to learn more.

While we sleep the toxins in our body rise to the inside surface of our mouths as part of our natural detoxification process. This is why we wake up with morning breath. Your body wants you to get rid of it! Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic dental technique that pulls and draws those toxins away from the body improving oral and overall health. It’s one of those feel good habits that’s a bit funky & weird at first but it quickly becomes something you will crave to do every day. I know I do!

It’s super simple. It’s the very first thing I do when I wake up and can be done while I do other things like boil my water, make my bed and feed my cat. Here is a little step by step as well as a list of all the amazing benefits you will experience once you add oil pulling to your morning regime.

Oil Pulling How To:

  1. Put about a tablespoon of oil (I use coconut oil) in your mouth.

  2. Swish it around for 5-20 minutes (you can build up to this) I swish while I multitask other morning things, you can shower, journal do all the things!

  3. When time is up spit contents of your mouth into a tissue (You don’t want to spit down the drain or toilet because it could get stuck in the drain and harden with a temperature drop causing a clog)

  4. Follow up with tongue scraping then carry on with your day.

  5. Make sure you are oil pulling on an empty stomach and that it is the first thing that you do.

Oil Pulling Benefits:

  1. Reduces harmful bacteria in the mouth which are responsible for tooth decay, bad breath cavities, gum disease etc..

  2. Reduces bad breath. A result of killing bad bacteria.

  3. Naturally whitens teeth.

  4. Helps clear sinuses.

  5. Reduces Inflammation.

  6. Has been linked to clearing skin conditions, arthritis, asthma, headaches, hormone imbalances, infections & liver problems to name a few.
